Setting Goals and Forming Healthy Habits

Christmas has come and gone – we hope this was the best one yet! With gift wrap filling our recycling bins and leftover festive eats clearing out of our fridges, it is clear that the holiday season is winding down.

And with visions of sugar plums dancing out of our heads, now is the time when many of us turn our attention to the upcoming New Year. While, personally, we prefer not to set, “New Year’s Resolutions” (due mainly to the standard New Year’s Day resolutions losing momentum well before spring), we, like many others, do enjoy facing a new challenge at the beginning of the year.

As you may have experienced first-hand, conquering these self-inflicted challenges and reaching our goals requires us to focus our attention, at least until the actions have been established as habits. It is this forming of habits that is absolutely critical to ensure you are able to integrate the lifestyle adjustment into your routine, and reap the benefits throughout your life. Because outcomes don’t happen unless actions are consistently carried out, and results don’t last unless true habits are established. If you think about it, a truly healthy, balanced and sustainable lifestyle doesn’t end after 30 or 90 days… so your attention to it shouldn’t either.

To start the process of establishing strong, realistic and meaningful goals this season, we recommend beginning by assessing your current lifestyle.

  • What healthy and sustainable habits do you currently have?
  • How long have you carried out these habits?
  • When striving to initially establish these habits, what worked well for you (and what didn’t)?
  • What do you hope to accomplish by this time next year? and
  • What steps do you need to take to get there?

If your goal(s) will be health or body composition related, like so many of our New Year’s goals are, know that our team at MacroNutrition Coaching can offer you ongoing guidance, motivation and support to help get you where you want to be.
